The HOLLYWOOD GREYHOUND TRACK opened its doors on Dec 1st, 1934, with some 1200 fans ignoring the sub-freezing temperatures to wager $14,000. The first race was won by Buddy Hawk paying $62.00 to win.
The greyhound is said to be the oldest purebred dog in the world. Mention of greyhounds can be found in pre-Christian histories in Ireland, Scotland, England, Russia, Persia, Arabia, Greece and Turkey among other nations. The breed was developed for hunting.
In 1940, with the growth of Greyhound Racing, a Clubhouse was added to the Grandstand with improvments continuing through 1969.
The track as we know it today opened on November 30th, 1974, with seating for over 4,000 fans and a total capacity of 25,000. Our parking lot accommodates 3,600 plus cars.
The Track offers South Floridians and our visitors much more than just greyhound racing. There is a Poker Room offered during all live racing. The Flea Market is open for your shopping pleasures every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8a.m til 3 p.m. with free parking on Fridays.
With the Popular addition of simulcasting the Hollywood Greyhound Track offers pari-mutuel wagering 7 days a week, on greyhound thoroughbred and harness racing from all over the country. The in-house information channel keeps all fans informed of post times and jackpots. With hundreds of big-screen televisions throughout the facility, fans can keep track of all the races plus major league sports and pay-per-view special events. The Vegas-style Sports Book modular tables allow the fans to catch all the action in comfort.
The new Dog House Sports Bar & Grill offers your choice of sports and pari-mutuel events and a menu that specializes in mouth-watering selections for both lunch and dinner 7 days a week from 11:30 a.m. til closing.
For fine dining, the Greyhound Room is located on the 3rd floor overlooking our magnificent and manicured track. Patrons can enjoy dining on steaks, seafood and other fine foods at reasonable prices while watching the excitement of live races from their tables. The elegant room is available for parties or business events.
